Filipino boxing hero Manny Pacquiao knocked out David Diaz to win the WBC lightweight title before a jampacked crowd at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino Saturday (Sunday in Manila).Pacquiao sent a battered Diaz down the canvas with a left hook with 26 seconds remaining in the ninth round.
The details of their fight last night round by round:
Round 1: Manny lands heavy bombs from both left and right. Diaz refuses to go down but unable to land any clear shot.
Round 2: Manny demonstrates lethal effectiveness of his right jabs using it to stop Diaz attacks. Diaz is unable to land effective counters and Pacquiao’s right left combination caused a cut on Diaz’ right eyebrow.
Round 3: Diaz starts to fight back but unable to land anything worth mentioning. His absorption capacity though is tremendous. Pacquiao’s left has not lost any strength with the increase in weight and his right hand now is surprisingly strong and very fast. Despite that, Diaz remains standing.
Round 4 - The two southpaws exchanged blows but Pacquiao kept pouncing on Diaz with a flurry of left and right punches.
Round 5 - Pacquiao threw jabs at Diaz and continued his relentless attack. Diaz’s cut over his right eye got bigger.
Round 6 - Diaz again tried to pressure Pacquiao in the sixth round only to receive more punishment.
Round 7 - Pacquiao continued his domination of the fight by connecting punches to head of Diaz.
Round 8 - Pacquiao unloaded soft shots and followed up with strong punches to the head and body of Diaz, who obviously is a sturdy lightweight.
Round 9 - Diaz falls, Pacquiao wins
